Using a Cooking Spatula to Flip Pancakes

By Roger D. Romen

Everybody loves pancakes, right? Unless you are on a no carb diet or you despise food, you probably enjoy a stack of pancakes now and then. Most people don't have pancakes on a regular basis like they would cereal or something like that because they take longer to make, but they are delicious.

Pancakes are one of the breakfasts that take a little longer to make. With cereal, you can just pour out a bowl and pour milk over-top. With pancake, you have to measure out ingredients to make batter, pour the batter on a hot griddle, cook, flip, cook, and serve. That's a bit longer and more to do.

Pancakes aren't too difficult to make, but if you want them to look great, you have to get all the right techniques down just right. One technique that really affects the look of pancakes is the flipping. If you don't flip them just right, you could end up with a mess of cake that hardly resembles what we know as a pancake.

Now that you want to know how to flip pancakes, you need to make sure you have the right tools. Of course, most importantly you will need something to flip it with. You should use some sort of cooking spatula or turner. Use basically the same thing you use to flip burgers.

First, get the batter on the pan. Don't make the pancakes too big or they will be hard to flip. Make them about 6 inches in diameter at most. Make sure they are ready to flip. They should have tiny bubbles formed along the top and this should take about a minute.

Quickly slide the spatula under the pancakes. Do this quickly or else you might just end up pushing the pancake forward and into other pancakes, or worse, off the griddle. Lift up the pancake and place the side of the spatula to the right of where you want it to be. Quickly flip it over and you're done!
