The Different Versions of Waffles

Everyone loves waffles. They are a favorite for both breakfast and desert. Most people are familiar with their famous grid like pattern which is caused by the raised surfaces of the waffle maker's hot plates. However, what many people don't know is that waffles come in all sorts of different types and flavors.

To make a certain type of waffle you first need to know the recipe for its batter. The basic version consists of flour, egg, water and baking powder or yeast. However, this can vary tremendously on what part of the world you come from and the local customs. Even the size and shape of the waffle maker that cooks the batter can be very different depending on which country you are in.

This type of food is very old with the recipe dating back to the middle ages. Back then they were called 'wafers' and they were cakes that were cooked between an iron that was placed over a wood fire. They were sold on the streets of medieval cities.

American waffles are the most well known in the USA. The waffle was brought to the States by pilgrims from Holland in 1620. Today, they are a popular and sweet breakfast item which is usually covered in syrup or butter.

Outside of America, the Belgian waffle is probably the most famous. They are lighter and thicker than other types of waffles. Just like the vendors in the middle ages, this cake can be bought on the streets in some European countries.

Other countries also have their own types of waffles. The Hong Kong waffle is a grid cake which is sold on the streets in the former British colony. They are more round and of a larger size than the American version. Stroopwafels are found in the Netherlands and have been around since the 18th century. They are cut in half with the filling acting as a glue which binds the pieces together.

If you want to make a standard waffle or one of its many international various, take a look in a good cook book or do a quick search on the internet for a recipe. You will also find some creative variations and ideas that can work wonders during those special occasions when you have friends or family over for a meal.

There is a wide range of different makers on the market and it is essential that you buy one that produces quality waffles. With the right research and maker you will baking waffles like an expert in days.
