Panini Sandwiches

By Anthony Tripp

Eating a sandwich everyday at lunch time can get to be pretty monotonous. You aren't eight years old anymore and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich is no longer high cuisine. It's time to add some variety to your meals and one of the easiest ways to do that is to start making panini sandwiches.

Panino is the Italian word for sandwich, panini is the plural form of that word. Even though it is not technically correct to call a single sandwich a panini, it doesn't change the fact that they are delicious. Adding heat and pressure to a variety of ingredients including meats, cheeses, spreads and vegetables somehow creates a sandwich that's much more than the sum of its parts.

Making a panini sandwich at home is easy. First thing you'll need is a panini grill. They also go by the names, panini maker or panini press. You can find them in the kitchen appliance section of most stores. Be sure to choose one with removable heating plates that are dishwasher safe. They work like this, you place you sandwich on a hinged grill and then close the lid down to heat and press it at the same time. You can make a panini without a panini maker but if it's in your budget, my advice would be to treat yourself. As far as your lunch is concerned, it'll be the best $30-$50 you'll ever spend.

Not only does the heating blend the flavors of the all the ingredients together but it also creates a nice crusty outside. Using hearty breads such as sour dough, ciabatta or whole grain are the traditional way to make panini.

A panini recipe really isn't an exact science, it's more of a list of suggested ingredients. It's not like you can place an exact amount of a sandwich meat or spread on a panini. If you see a recipe that calls for 1/2 cup of salami, then I suggest you move on. The best part about making panini is that anything goes. There's so many combinations that you could come up with even by only adding a meat, a cheese and a spread. Then you'll have to think about grilled vegetables, sauces or even fruits. You can't beat a peanut butter, banana and chocolate panini. The sky is the limit so be sure to experiment with all of your favorite ingredients.

Bringing a bagged lunch with you everyday can become a drag over time. And eating out can get expensive. If you want to make lunch time a more enjoyable experience, all you need is a panini grill and a few panini recipes. After that it's up to you to use your imagination to come up with delicious panini sandwiches.
