Enjoying a Homemade Valentine's Dinner

By Jana Banks

As the most romantic holiday approaches, it's time to start thinking about how you'll celebrate and where you would like to dine. A lot of couples enjoy eating a fancy dinner at their favorite special restaurant. Another wonderful option is celebrating with a romantic meal in the comfort of your own home. Not only is it quiet and private place to enjoy your date, but it's generally a lot less pricey and you don't need a reservation.

It's quite a lot of fun creating your own romantic atmosphere. There are some special touches that will set the mood perfectly. For your table, you can start with a nice linen tablecloth and complementary linen napkins for each setting. The centerpiece can be a fresh bouquet of flowers with a circle of some scented tea lights or votive candles. Next place your good dishes, silverware, and sparkling glassware at each place setting. Add some romantic background music, light the candles and your atmosphere is all set.

What kind of dinner you prepare depends on your level of cooking experience - if you love to cook and you're good at it, by all means go crazy. If you're looking for something less challenging, there's nothing wrong with keeping it simple and focusing on great results. You really only need a few courses for a lovely meal. Start with a favorite appetizer or soup, then an entre with some tasty side dishes, followed by a decadent dessert and some rich coffee or herbed tea.

Pick your menu based on the main entre. For instance if you're both big on poultry, you can serve herbed chicken breasts with wild rice and a fresh baby green salad. Do you prefer a sirloin steak or baked fish? Then you might prefer to serve your sirloin with garlic potatoes and sugar snap peas or a baked flounder with lemon asparagus and herbed risotto. Whatever you choose will be fine if you choose something you both enjoy and stick to cooking what you're good at.

When it comes to your dessert, why not splurge? Visit your favorite local bakery and pick out something sinful and beautiful to enjoy. However, if you love to bake and want to go with a homemade dessert, than pick something you'd both enjoy and something you know you can easily make. Serve it with some rich coffee or a sweet dessert coffee with a kick like hot buttered coffee or chocolate hazelnut coffee.

Of course the most important part of the meal is that you enjoy each other's company. And it will much more enjoyable if the meal is relaxed. So do your prep work in advance, such as setting the table early in the day and preparing any of the food items you can in advance as well, even the day before if possible. Then you both can enjoy a romantic and memorable Valentine's Dinner in the comfort of your home.
