How Would You Like To Grill Eggs On A Big Green Egg?

By Mike Pit

A strip mall in Atlanta, Ga. is the origin of the Big Green Egg (BGE). It was invented back in 1974 by a guy named Ed Fisher. The idea was borrowed from the Oriental concept of ceramic cooking known as kamado. BGE is now the world's largest producer of this type of grill which is now the fastest growing category of cooker in the U.S. They also sell their EGG in 20 other countries around the world. The EGG comes in 5 sizes and can be coordinated with 100 different accessories.

With television programs like The Today Show, The View and channels like HGTV and Chefs like Bobby Flay touting it, the marketing needs little more than word of mouth. A champion barbecue cheg, Dr. BBQ, uses the EGG exclusively around the country. The passion that owners of the grill have is contagious.

Made with space age ceramics, these grills can endure any type of weather for good all around grilling. Whether you live in the Sahara Desert or the Yukon, the EGGs are a great purchase for your home. The five sizes are mini through extra large and the line's additions include cooking space extenders, natural lump charcoal, cleaning tools, utensils and pizza stones.

If you really want to be in tune with your EGG, you may want to consider the line of apparel designed to compliment it. And you can also get a training DVD which will help the novice grill chef cook perfectly the first time.

Benefits of the Big Green Egg grills include the following:

* You don't need lighter fluid and it will be hot enough to cook in 10 minutes

* Ceramics are the key to retaining heat in all conditions for precise temperature control

* You can reuse your unburned charcoal, so you don't need extra charcoal

* No flare-ups within the enclosed EGG.

* The EGG's temperature tolerance is 0F to 1800F

* Smoke a chicken in Janurary

* Outer surface is always cool to the touch

* Rust proof

* Retains flavor and juices for mouthwatering food products.

Anything is possible on this grill, from main dishes, to side dishes to desserts. It's so dynamic that you can sear, grill on high, or slow smoke a chicken. Unlike other grills, all you need to do is put in some natural lump charcoal, turn it on and it's ready in 10 minutes

The largest EGG, the XL EGG has 425 sq inches of cooking surface. That equates to 24 hamburgers or 11 whole chickens, 12 steaks or 2 twenty pound turkeys. It'll also do 14 full racks of ribs at a time. The Large version has 255 sq inches and can handle 1 twenty pound turkey, 12 burgers and half a dozen chickens. That's still a lot of chickens

If you're looking for something a bit smaller, the Small EGG comes in at 133 square inches of cooking surface. That'll cook a 12 pound turkey, 4 burgers, a chicken, 2 steaks or a rack of ribs. If you want something portable, the Mini Big Green Egg is great for camp outs. It'll cook a couple of chicken breasts, a couple of pork chops or a steak.

Whichever one is right for you, you can find them around the world at places like Barbecues Galore, High Country Outfitters and online at Amazon.com
