The Best Things About Summer Time

By Jane A Moore

My absolute favorite time of the year is summer time. I have so many friends that seem like they have a whole new personality when summer is approaching. Like my friends, I love getting out as soon as the weather turns warm, whether that means meeting my friends after work on a restaurant patio, or having them over for a backyard bar-b-que, or going for bike rides and hikes in the sunny weather.

I was asked to distill my love for summer into a top three list. I immediately rattled off three things I love about summer. I then immediately amended the list. I soon realized that I needed some time to think carefully about this list. I could easily come up with the top 20 things I love about summer and with little trouble craft a top 10 list. A top 3 things I love about summer time was going to be difficult.

I took about a week to decide on my final list of excellent summer time things. After narrowing down the endless list of awesome things, I finally decided on: 1) spending time gardening in one of my many gardens (house and cottage, front and back yards), 2) spending time riding my seadoo at our lake cottage, and 3) having gourmet meals that I cook with my Big Green Egg.

I just love cooking; I absolutely can't turn the channel if either Rachel Ray or Iron Chef America is on. And bar-b-quing has become my summer cooking option of choice. But not just any bbq, it is way more fun if you have the luxury of cooking with a Big Green Egg. This thing has changed our perspective on bbqs - it is a natural charcoal smoker made of ceramic, it is shaped like a giant egg, and it is glazed a dark green. You can add wood chips to it so you can smoke something all day at 200 degrees, or you can open the drafts and have it reach close to 700 degrees to sear a steak in 3-4 minutes. It even rivals wood fired pizza ovens for cooking pizzas.

I love the water and love to be on or in the water as much as possible. I have always had a love of personal watercraft such as windsurfers and canoes. My most recent personal watercraft passion involves Seadoos. I love to pull off the Seadoo cover early in the morning and get out on the lake. I don't love the roar of anything motorized. I just love to putt around the lake and take in the sounds of the morning.

My next favorite thing about summertime is my garden. I guess I should say that gardening is my favorite thing, since I don't think I would enjoy my garden as much if I just hired a gardener. No, I love to be out working in the garden, weeding, figuring out what plants need to be moved, planning whether I should add more bulbs this fall for next spring. My Achilles heel is pruning - I know it brings plants back fuller and stronger, but it's so hard to lose so much growth. I'm getting getting better year by year, and I'm happy I force myself to do it because it really does have a big effect.

It took me a little while to narrow down my list of great summer time activities to just this list of my top three. There were a lot of things that I didn't include on this list, like mountain biking through back trails, going on hiking/camping trips, driving up the coast and visiting touristy fishing villages, and one that just missed the top three by a hair, going to the drive-in. I can't wait until next summer, when I can enjoy my seadoo, gardening and Big Green Egg for another entire season.
