Biscuits Made From Scratch Add A Homemade Touch To Any Meal

By Susanne Myers

Because most of us are in a big hurry all day and all night long, we seldom spend any time in the kitchen preparing a homemade dinner. Back in the old days, a dinner involved long hours of work with a table full of homemade goodies from scratch. But, with most households lacking a person dedicated to staying home to make dinner, we quickly scramble to just get the basic necessities for a meal on the table each night. But, we long for something wonderfully homemade from scratch at dinner, don't we? What if you took just one food item on tonight's dinner table and made it from scratch? What if that food was simple homemade biscuits?

Homemade biscuits made from scratch are the perfect choice because they are easy to make. With much fuss, homemade biscuits can easily be measured and mixed with the help of the whole family. Get the kids ready to mix the dough together with their little hands. Even very young children with short attention spans can help as this dough needs very little mixing time. The dough will be ready long before the kids lose their interest!

Homemade biscuit recipes usually call for only four or five basic ingredients. You'll use, of course, flour, baking powder, and salt, with some kind of shortening, oil, and milk. Be sure to use a good, heavy mixing bowl. Just measure everything into the bowl and you'll be ready to mix and get the dough ready to roll!

Be sure you have a nice big surface to roll the dough out onto, preferably someplace sturdy and easy for everyone to reach. Grab a little extra white flour for coating the surface to prevent the dough from sticking. You can use a rolling pin to roll out the biscuit dough, but your hands will work also.

After the dough is flattened, you can use any circular item you want to cut out the biscuit. Using an empty soup can that's smooth and clean may be ideal for young children, rather than using a sharp object. If you have an authentic biscuit cutter, of course that would be wonderful. Even a drinking glass could work just fine. Whatever you choose, dip the edge of the object into some flour before you cut out the biscuit. This will help keep the biscuit dough from sticking to the cutter.

You'll want to preheat your oven to a hot temperature before you are done cutting out the biscuits. As you cut your biscuits, arrange them evenly on a baking or cookie sheet. Then all you have to do is closely watch them in the oven as they begin to turn a delicious golden color!

Even if your dinner hour is hectic, you may want to take these few minutes to make homemade biscuits. This is a project that takes only about 20 minutes and will yield the most delightful results - hot, buttery biscuits made from scratch!

If you've been sitting around the dinner table wondering to yourself what's missing, it could be that special touch of something homemade from scratch. With just a little extra time and a few simple ingredients, you can serve your family real homemade biscuits nice and warm right out of the oven. Now that's a meal worth coming home to!
