Cupcake Decorations: Fast, Fun Christmas Cupcake Ideas

By Daphne McSmith

I don't know about you, but I love Christmas decorations - seeing them as well as creating them - and this certainly includes cupcake decorations. After all, 'tis the season for a bit more ... shall we say enjoyment of treats than usual? So go ahead and have some fun decorating those cupcakes - and of course eating them!

- Sprinkles are just about the easiest way to go, any time of year. For quick and simple, yet festive Christmas cupcakes, all you need do is bake up a batch of cupcakes (from scratch, or if you're really in a time crunch, use your favorite mix.) Then, top with green, white, or red frosting; toss on some green and red sprinkles, and you have quick and easy Christmas cupcakes.

- Snowdrift - here's a fun one that will also save you some time. All you have to do is make your favorite cupcakes, get some white frosting (or green, or red if you like) powdered sugar and shredded coconut. Now you see the picture ... slap on the frosting, top with coconut and sprinkle them with the powdered sugar ... now where did I park the sled?

- Quick, easy Christmas trees - your local grocer should have an assortment of gel icing, in tubes - green or red are best, of course - but go with whatever color(s) you like. Top your cupcakes with white icing, and simply draw Christmas tree shapes on the cakes, using your gel icing. Try wavy lines, or simple triangles with basic trunks in drawing your trees ... as always, don't be afraid to experiment a little!

- This is one that will work for parties year-round - birthdays, holidays ... not just Christmas. What we're doing is creating place markers or party favors in the form of gift-wrapped packages in miniature on top of each cupcake. Vary your colors of frosting, use square/cubed candies to resemble boxes, and long, thin candy such as licorice for bows ... your name cards are made from gift tags ... can you say "hit of the party?"

- Frosty the Cupcake - kids of all ages will love these snowman cupcakes; start with white icing, add a large marshmallow, then top that with a small marshmallow. To hold your squishy snowman together, insert a toothpick through the marshmallows, into the cupcake. For Frosty's features, an assortment of small candies (dots, beads, etc.) work best, with a dab of icing helping to hold the candies in place.

- Christmas train centerpiece - your cars can be made from Tootsie rolls - but experiment with other, similar shapes. Any small, round candies make good wheels, and black licorice makes great train tracks. Use multiple cupcakes, side-by-side to form your train, and let that inspiration flow ... you'll be known as the "engineer" of Christmas cupcakes!

These cupcake decorations for Christmas are sure to make you a hit with family, friends, and at holiday parties. Enjoy the creative process, and of course, the yummy results! You can find your decorating supplies in a lot of places - grocers, party supply stores, even the corner convenience market (or try our recommended supplier.)
