By Matthew Kerridge

Our kitchens are the most important room in the home. It draws people close and gets conversations going. It provides a great place to experiment with new recipes and most important it helps us feed and nourish our loved ones. If you have some money to spare at a tight budget, then you can transform this important room into a modern kitchen in no time.

Your kitchen, no matter what the size is, has to give you the maximum usage while also being modern and stylish. It need not be a dingy old room where no one wants to enter. Let's see how you could revamp your kitchen on a shoestring budget:

Before you start make sketches of how you envisage your new kitchen. Try to use a kitchen design package on the internet if you can. This will save you lots of money down the line because here you can afford to make mistakes. Once you have settled on a theme and color scheme for your kitchen, then start working systematically by doing the large objects first.

If you just want to repaint the cabinet doors, then go with a white enamel which will instantly give you a modern look. Replace your door handles with stainless steel or transparent glass knobs. These will brighten up the doors and will change their look completely. Remember the smaller your kitchen is the lighter the color should be on your surfaces.

You can then buy glazed sticky film and paste this onto the fiberglass. They come in many patterns or just plain. Install some cheap recess lights under your cabinets and inside as well. Choose soft tone light bulbs like green, yellow, pink and purple. When switched on they will give the your kitchen an illumines look.

A counter top is extremely important because it is the one item in the kitchen that takes a lot of knocks. So try to use a good quality laminate counter. These are made by manufacturers who specialize in counter tops and come in hundreds of colors. Make sure that your custom counter top is professionally designed and is assembled correctly before you do anything else in the kitchen. Your cabinets and counter top have to be totally complete before you go onto the next project.

Last would be your flooring. Vinyl is the ultimate cost saver. Again the sheets or blocks come in thousands of patterns and colors which will make you dizzy. Keep it a neutral color blending in with your cabinets and counter top. Following these easy tips would give you a modern kitchen in no time by not having to break the bank.
