Learn New Recipes by Playing Video Games

By Patrick Shay

You probably always that most video games focused on beating enemies, winning a race, or solving a puzzle. However, Nintendo has added a new dimension to video games--cooking. Several of their titles, available for the portable Nintendo DS, focus on cooking. Most games are centered around teaching new skills to those with little experience in the kitchen. I was very surprised at the number of games available in the cooking genre. These are just a few samples:

What's Cooking? with Jamie Oliver is an interactive cookbook that allows you to cook recipes in the virtual world as well as in your own kitchen. While the thought of cooking on a Nintendo DS might seem a bit strange, you'll discover that as you compete against the computer you have access to more recipes which you can later try in real life. You can even share recipes using the Wifi connection on your Nintendo DS Lite. You'll probably find that What's Cooking makes a better cookbook than a game. It comes with 100 of Jamie Oliver's delicious recipes that you can recreate at home using the shopping list function included with the game.

Gourmet Chef: Cook Your Way to Fame is another attempt by Nintendo to help you learn how to cook. However, this time an emphasis is placed on the art of French cooking. This game is more about learning certain cooking tasks with the stylus and then later applying them to real recipes. Gourmet Chef is geared more towards adults who want to learn how to cook than kids. A game better geared toward kids is Cooking Mama.

A very popular cooking game with adults and children is Cooking Mama. There are many different titles to choose from in the Cooking Mama series. In this action-packed game you compete against other chefs to win the gold medal. This game is very interactive and makes use of the advanced features of the Nintendo DS console. One example is being able to cool down your dishes by blowing in the microphone. You really have to be careful with this game though because once you start playing it can be hard to stop.

Personal Trainer: Cooking would be a great gift for someone just learning how to cook or for someone interested in trying different types of recipes from around the globe. This game is more like a cookbook that comes to life with videos and descriptions of every ingredient you need for your recipe. Instead of a competition, Personal Trainer: Cooking focuses on learning new tasks and recipes. You can even make your shopping on the DS and take it with you to the store.

These are just a few examples of the numerous cooking games available for the Nintendo DS consoles. There are many more titles to choose from. You probably never thought about learning how to cook using a video game but the portability and interactive features of the Nintendo DS has opened up all different kinds of possibilities. If you're interested in cooking but can't be in your kitchen 24 hours a day you might enjoy some of these cooking games.
