Ideas for Efficient Combination of Food with Wine

By John Bakers

There are two primary ways wine and food can be combined. You can enjoy a glass of wine when eating, or use wine when preparing the food either you or someone else will be eating. Naturally, you will want to follow the second method with the first unless, of course, the situation and timing does not call for it. Combining wine and wood is not recommended for those too young, feeble or mature to appreciate the benefits. For those who are in a position to combine them, though, most should do enjoy both methods if possible and maybe even at the same time.

Wine has been said to have several health benefits. For instance, it can help improve digestion. But, it can also enhance the flavors of the food it accompanies. Red wine or sangria has even been said to offer health benefits for your heart. There are many different thoughts on which wines should be combined with certain foods, but the best rule to follow is "it's right if it tastes right" although some would argue with this principle. In any event, there seems to be little of a downside to combining wine and food if it tastes right.

How to cook with wine is probably best exemplified in Italian and French cooking styles. Both use combinations of food and wines. For example, red wines are used in meat dishes and bastes while white wines are often used in preparing certain vegetables and deserts. Of course, this is a very simple, efficient explanation as there are many great recipes available.

But, the general idea is that wines add to the flavor and tenderization of meats and vegetables. Contrary to what many might expect, using wine in the preparation of food does not result in a wine or alcoholic taste in the food as the cooking typically boils the alcohol taste away. In fact, anyone of any age can enjoy the combination of wine and food through cooking.

Now, the ultimate combination of cooking with wine and also drinking wine is clearly the most fun combination but, of course, with a downside. It is important to be careful when preparing food with wine while also drinking in that you do not want to drink so much you forget how to cook. Or, you may even drink so much that you combine the wrong food with the wrong wine or vice versa.

Perhaps has been the downfall of many potentially great chef. What a way to lead to some real kitchen drama. As with all things, moderation is the key. Go ahead and enjoy a glass of wine while cooking with wine. Just remember that you need to leave some wine for the cooking process!
