Great Italian Food Cooked In Different Italian Regions

By Fisiwe Owen

The Tuscan Italian food is great. But one appeal of Tuscan Italian food is that it is generally healthy. This is due in large part to its use of olive oil. There are many different varieties of olives that are grown in the area and used extensively in the cooking. Beans are also widely used as are vegetables, seasonal fruits, and mushrooms. Of course the area also has the cheeses that are a signature of Italian food. In October and November the people are up for a real treat because this is when the famous white truffles of the area appear. Contrasting this lighter side of the Italian food is the extensive use of meat in Tuscany. High quality beef can be found in the region.

Tuscany has perhaps more unique Italian food dishes than any other region. Some popular dishes include fresh vegetables either raw or slightly cooked and served with olive oil that is seasoned for dipping. Tuscany is also known for a reheated vegetable soup dish. The meat dishes that are most unique to the area include Tuscan-style veal shank and T-bone steak. The Italian food that features pork in the area includes creamed bacon and a complicated dish of pig's liver stuffed into a pig's stomach and then slowly baked with stock and red wine.

Trentino-Alto Adige region

Italian food has a rich history. It draws on the influences of many different cultures and time periods. It is a great melting pot of different ideas all brought together by a distinctly Italian flavor that makes it Italian food, the most sought after cuisine in the world. The region of Trentino-Alto Adige is a great example of how history has affected and influenced Italian food.

There are some specific dishes that are unique to this region. One is potato dumplings with ricotta. You might not think of dumplings when thinking of Italian food, but they are quite common to the area. They even have canederli, a specific dumpling unique to the area that is made with leftover bread. This region also boasts its own regional sauerkraut as well as a stuffed chicken dish.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia Italian food

This region shares a border with the former Yugoslavia and shares a lot of the same traditions, including culinary traditions. The Italian food here is strong with Austrian, Hungarian, Slovenian, and Croatian influences. One of places that this is most apparent is in the beer halls of the area. Here they feature such dishes as Viennese sausage and goulash. Goulash, which originated as a Hungarian dish, has taken on a distinct Italian taste here and can often be found in fine Italian food restaurants both in and out of Italy. Goulash is immensely popular in this region and is a thick stew of beef and local vegetables such as onions and red peppers. It is very thick and seasoned with paprika and can be served with pasta. Another dish that makes a frequent appearance at the beer halls in this area is Bohemian hare.

So the next time you're up for some Italian food, branch out and try some different regional cuisines.

A Brief Account of Mexican Food History

By KC Kudra

Mexican food has enjoyed great popularity in America for years. From burritos to enchiladas, Mexican recipes are the pride of many an American cook and the colorful, spicy, delicious dishes grace many a table. Nevertheless, what is the story behind the cuisine? A little Mexican food history can spice up your kitchen and shed some light on the roots of many or our favorite dishes.

Although the Mayan culture is often credited for giving Mexican food its roots, the strongest influence came from the Spanish when they invaded Mexico in 1521. Cortez, the Spanish explorer, along with his followers, introduced many new foods into the Mexican culture. Pigs, cows and sheep as well as herbs, dairy products and various spices such as garlic had never graced a Mexican table until that time.

On the flip side, the Mexicans also introduced new food to Cortez. He had never had chocolate, vanilla, peanuts, beans, coconuts, avocados, squash, tomatoes, and corn. So for all that, Cortez brought with him and introduced into the Mexican culture, he also took away as much, balancing the trade of regional foods.

According to Mexican food history, many of the traditional Mexican foods have roots in other cultures as well as the Mexican culture. For instance, quesadillas, a mainstay in Mexico and considered to be authentic Mexican food actually not only have roots in Mexican traditions, but in Spanish as well. The corn tortilla, thought to be quintessential Mexican, is actually native American.

The cheese, pork, beef, and lettuce that grace so many of our favorite Mexican dishes, including the quesadilla, are Spanish. The hot sauce that is made from chili pepper, though, is indigenous to Mexico. However, it is a little known Mexican food history fact that many of the spices thought to be Mexican are actually Spanish in origin. Black pepper, cinnamon, coriander and oregano are several spices that are often used in Mexican cooking but are not native to the country.

The French are yet another chapter in Mexican food history. Under a brief French occupation in the 1860's, Mexico was introduced to other new foods and cooking methods. This resulted in popular dishes like stuffed chilies in a walnut sauce, known as chiles en nogado. These dishes, French inspired with a strong Mexican flair, have made their way through the various cultures to meld together and create dishes that the world can enjoy.

One of the most popular adaptations of Mexican food and an integral part of Mexican food history is the influence from the Southwest United States, namely southern Texas. This style of Mexican food, dubbed "Tex-Mex" has become a favorite of people all over the world. North meets south in this cultural combination of northern Mexico and Southwestern Texas. In many restaurants today, it is more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican food that is being served.

Mexican food history has enjoyed many different cultural influences, making it varied and rich. This variety of cultural adaptations makes Mexico a veritable melting pot of culinary experiences. This has worked in its favor, though, with delicious dishes and are popular and fun - to eat and to create.

Is Fat Loss 4 Idiots an Effective Diet Plan?

By Cristina Conley

One of the hot diets out on the market is Fat Loss 4 Idiots, and it's surrounded by an immense amount of hype, but in actuality, this diet (not unlike most diets) is not the panacea that it's advertised to be, but it is an attractive diet for the right type of dieter.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots claims to be the only diet available that will help you lose 9 pounds every 11 days. To clarify: that's not 9 pounds in 11 days, that's 9 pounds each 11-day period while on the diet. Obviously, this is a significant reason to be wary of this diet plan, or at least skeptical that its claims might be exaggerated, even for a fast weight loss diet!

When you examine the diet, you begin to understand that this claim is moderated due to the nature of the diet. Fat Loss 4 Idiot espouses "off" days, where you are free to eat whatever you desire. Each two-week period, you are to take three of these off days.

We all know that during the first four to five days on a diet, the pounds glide off easily, resulting from cleansing your colon and eliminating water weight. On the Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet then, you experience this initial drop during each 2-week period.

So this might look a little like this: begin the diet and drop 9 pounds in 11 days, and gain 3 back during the next 3 days; lose 9 pounds during the second period and gain 3 back during the off days. The final result is indeed 9 pounds lost every 11 days, but a total weight loss of only 6 pounds every two weeks. Of course, even those figures would be very difficult to maintain over the long term, but it does illustrate how the diet creators approach weight loss.

A very positive part of this plan is the off days. During each two week period, you spend 11 days on the diet and 3 days off the diet. This is an effective, but little-used approach, and is one that is shared by another innovative diet, the Cheat to Lose Diet. The principle is that you keep your body from entering starvation or conservation mode with the off days, and because you can satisfy your cravings as often as every two weeks, the diet is easier to stick to than other fast weight lose diets over the long-term.

The diet is also very simple for nearly anyone to use because it spends no time, and I mean absolutely none, educating you about how the diet works. It simply tells you what to eat. On the plus side, this is the fastest, brain-dead-simple way to start a diet; but it is far from perfect for those dieters who are interested in the facts behind why a diet works the way it does. If you are an information consumer, this do-what-I-say approach can grow tired quickly.

A final point to note about the diet is the simplicity of it. It's fast and easy to begin, and it's a low-maintenance plan because Fat Loss 4 Idiots doesn't place much emphasis on carbohydrate and calorie counting or even portion size; instead, the program frequently encourages you to "eat short of being full."

The major difference between the Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet plan and other weight loss programs is that the Fat Loss 4 Idiots diet formula is specifically designed to keep your body guessing so it never thinks it's starving.

You should also note that this is a diet, plain and simple. It's not a weight loss plan and there is no exercise element involved. If your goal is fast weight loss, you are likely aware that you will need to add an exercise component like strength training and intervals to your complete plan.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots, like any other diet, works only if you work it. But Fat Loss 4 Idiots is simpler to work due to its low amount of required maintenance, regular off days, and easy plans. But you will be wise to avoid this diet if you want to see the details under the surface. Personally, I like facts, and I need facts to stick with a plan. If you're similar, you would be wise to consider another diet plan.
